Most family secrets start or reveal themselves in a kitchen where you move through life’s best and worst moments. It is an honor to be a part of this production, to share Zora’s work with Chicago, and to collaborate with some of the most amazing actors, designers and collaborators in the city. I believe that is the goal of this play: an invitation to reflect on how you love, hurt, heal and dream, with family or alone. I’ll forever cherish that time with my daughters. Days later, we were still quoting lines from the play and recounting our favorite moments. Together, my daughters and I laughed (howled!), talked back to the play, cried, and left with lots to talk about. The play was familiar, like Zora took words from our household. We knew right away it was something special and I was an instant admirer of Zora Howard’s ability to write such a rich story about these women.
